DECEMBER 2011 - PELHAMS PARK LEISURE - TEMPORARY CLOSURE Our class at the Pelhams Park Leisure every Saturday at 4:00 – 5:30 pm has for sometime now struggled to meet the requirements for attendance and recruitment. The consequences of that, is that we have not covered the cost of studio hire for some months now. We have attempted introductory offers, cash rewards for new members and tried to encourage current students to attend on a regular basis to no avail. It is therefore regrettable that I have had to come to the decision to temporarily close this class at the end of this month, November 2011 until further notice. For those few students that actually attended this class, I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that this causes. However, we do look forward to seeing you at one of our other nearby locations. We will hopefully resume this class at some point in 2012.
September 2011 - ONE OUR TEENAGE GIRL STUDENTS ATTACKED!! One of our teenage female students, Fizzy Lawson aged 15 years writes, “I was in Salisbury during September 2011. It was just after I picked up my results and as I was on my way to the bus station, three men jumped me and pinned me to the wall. I managed to turn around and kick the first guy between the legs, which made him let go, allowing me to face the other two. I delivered an open hand to the second man’s neck, and punched the remaining man in the face, possibly breaking his nose. I’m just glad that I do Karate at the Chase Karate Club. I used the self-defence techniques as taught by our Chief Instructor Sensei Neil Mann who clearly knows his stuff! Without his expert tuition, I don’t think that I would have got off so lightly.” We are so grateful - Many thanks – Mrs A. 17th July 2011 - 2ND DAN BLACK BELT SUCCESSES Congratulations to Ed Sheridan, Ian Moors and Jamie Wollen who successfully graded to 2nd Dan Black Belt in front of Senior B.S.K.A. instructors on Sunday 17th July 2011. It took almost a grueling 3 hours, where the participants had to workout, show their teaching abilities, perform various difficult movements from the Black Belt Grading syllabus, advanced Kata, followed by Kumite/free-fighting.

29th May 2011 - 4th Dan BLACK BELT SUCCESS
Congratulations to Sensei David who graded and was awarded his 4th Dan Black Belt at todays class at Rossmore Leisure Centre - He last graded 6.5 years ago, attended and trained 500 times exactly to the day, has supported and organised classes when I've been away on business or pleasure, Organised and judged the kata competition, sat on the black belt grading panel, retained and remains first aid qualified. During the past 6.5 yrs... David (and his lovely wife Heather) has also had two little angels... Rosie and William.. changed jobs and even moved home. David is knowledgeable and respected by everyone. He has been a loyal instructor and friend and like a brother to me although I'm old enough to be his dad! Congratulations David and keep up the good work.. from Chief Instructor Neil Mann 6th Dan Black Belt and Technical Director.

Please ensure that you address all Black Belts as ‘Sensei’ whilst in the Dojo. WHAT IS A BLACK BELT? After a long and difficult climb over a period of years, a student realises that the point of the pyramid is the first-degree black belt. The student also realises that he/she doesn’t want to “get” a black belt; but realises that the goal is to be a black belt. But what does that mean exactly? Physically, a first-degree black belt is a person who knows all the basic body movements and techniques, and who can apply those movements and techniques with enough extended force to neutralise an opponent of equal size, weight, and strength. Physically, that’s it! First-degree black belts can’t leap tall buildings with a single bound or slash through 30 attackers like Bruce Lee. What they can do-and do very well, is defend themselves in almost all common self-defence situations. They know how to fight, and they know how to compete. They have several years of experience in facing many different people of varying levels of skill. In other words, physically, a first-degree black belt is a person who has only mastered the basics of karate. SUNDAY

Inter-club kata championships We held our inter-club kata championships at the Rossmore Leisure Centre on Sunday 26th September 2010 from 4pm onwards. I quote,
'Gichin Funakoshi,' one of the founders of karate as we see
it today said, “The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in
victory or defeat (winning or losing), but in the perfection
of the character of its participants.” there is much to learn from
such an experience as competition, although this should be in no way
deemed as the be all and end all of karate. The first three place positions in the five categories are shown below.

Pictured above centre:- Sensei's Neil Mann 6th Dan and Terry O'Neill 7th Dan 22 of our Black and Brown belts have just returned from a special seminar held by Sensei Terry O’Neill 7th Dan Black Belt on Sunday 5th July 2009. Terry O’Neill is a senior member of the KUGB, an International Referee and Grading Examiner. He is recognised as one of the world’s most fearsome competitors. A master of innovation and tactical surprise, he has a dynamic and flamboyant fighting style that few could beat. Terry O’Neill has also appeared in movies such as Conan the Barbarian, Dragon Heart, League of extraordinary gentlemen, 51st State and not forgetting the TV series Civvies, Comics and the Governor. He has acted along side Arnold Schwarzenegger, and has been the martial arts consultant on many martial arts movies.
